The people the study of purpose is built on.
A wall of the people the study of purpose is built on. Each one carries the sentence that is unmistakably theirs, and a link to the best surviving home for their work.
About the two views
Index is the working view. Everything sits on the surface, ready to read. Wall is the gallery view, and it is what this page becomes once there are faces to hang. A grid of frames earns its space when the portraits arrive.
Every plate is a placeholder, and the dot in its corner tracks the work. Green means a freely licensed photograph already exists. Amber means a request to the person or their publisher should land it. Red means we commission the portrait or set the name typographically. The dot beside each source line tracks the quote. Green is verified in the primary text, amber is reported, red is our own summary.
Across the full roster, roughly six in ten have a free image, and the coverage is worst exactly where the roster is strongest. Eighteen of the twenty-eight living academics have no freely-licensed portrait anywhere. A wall built only from what is free would put a marble bust of Aristotle beside a conference snapshot beside a stained-glass window, and it would read as a folder, not a gallery.
The recommendation is a single commissioned illustration style applied to all of them, one hand, one crop, one treatment, which is the only route that gets to a uniform wall, covers everyone, and leaves the Center owning the images outright.
